Can someone tell me how this works?
Can someone tell me how this works?
Two years ago I upgraded from Windows 7 Pro to a purchased and downloaded copy of Windows 10 Home. The installer automatically upgraded the install to Windows 10 Pro, I guess because my system was running 7 Pro.
A year later I decided I didn't like Windows 10 Pro and downgraded back to Win 7 Pro with a clean install from an .iso I have.
I buy a new Dell with Windows 10 Home and upgraded this to Windows 10 Pro using the COA on the Windows tag from my T520.
Both copies are using the same COA are active and authentic according to MS. Is it because they are two different operating systems on two different computers? Has anyone else done this?
I didn't really think it would upgrade using the COA from the T520; it was just something I wanted to try for the heck of it...but it worked.

Re: Can someone tell me how this works?
It seems that 7 and 8 keys allow for the activation of 10, I think it maybe something to do with that free upgrade that they had way back when. Not going to complain about having free COA keys strapped to the back of my old TPs.
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.
The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

We have legitimately upgraded from Win7 Pro 64-bit to its Win10 equivalent in July 2019.
It can still be done, albeit with more hoops to jump through...

Re: Can someone tell me how this works?
That is not exactly what I was asking about.
I wanted to know how it is I can use one key for two different OS's on two different computers.
Windows 10 Pro was upgraded on the Dell using the Lenovo T520's key that is also being used for Win 7 Pro on the T520.

Re: Can someone tell me how this works?
So, you paid for 2 copies of Win10 Home (one downloaded, one with the DELL), and traded them for 1 copy of Win10 Pro (Win7 nonwithstanding)?
Sounds like a Win to me (pun intended), but not all would agree.
