I wouldn't jump to this conclusion so fast. It can just as likely be a display/inverter/fuse problem.

Hi and thanks for the reply.
You are right but it does have most of the symptoms:

• When it did boot it would freeze on the login screen after typing a bit, then unfreeze 30sec later

• It won't boot to an external display

• It used to work once in a while and turn off lcd when moved (this was 3 years ago).

Yesterday it worked fine and I went through all the built in stress testing in the bios (whatever that does), and it went for more than 3 hours, then when I tried to boot from a recovery cd it turned off the lcd.
The only thing that it doesn't have is that it won't boot when pressing on the gpu, or at all for that matter.
