What OS to install on A31p?

#1 Post by smf » Sat Nov 23, 2019 3:36 am

Hey ppl,

I have an A31p but idk the machine type as it has a new motherboard. Is it possible to find out what I specifically have for a motherboard? I'm running Win 7 Now, but with no drivers. The Video card driver installed but without software and is so bad I can't even so much as watch a youtube video. No sound. Will the Win XP drivers work on Vista? Am I better off with Vista than Win 7? Are there any drivers that work with A31p and Win 7? I'm so lost. I don't know what to do. . .

You're probably best with Windows XP on an A31p; it is at least semi-modern. Vista's compatibility with software is not much better these days, and it's hardware compatibility with A31p may be worse, plus it will be heavier.

Go into BIOS, there will be a line of characters starting with 265, the first 7 are the model number, the rest is the serial.

As for the OS, I'm with dr_st: install XP and call it a day.

I'd look for a lite version of XP or 7. The other day I put Win 7 ThinPC (x86) on my sister's old Acer Aspire 5612WLMi, which admittedly is a faster computer, but I will be putting it on my Thinkpad T43p soon. This version of Win 7 I am using is so fast and responsive, and my sister's Acer went from a boot time of just under 2mins down to a mere 20secs! This is with an mSATA SSD attached to the IDE bus! The SSD + case = £20 from Aliexpress and took a week to arrive in England (UK).

W7 has no support for the ancient GPU of A31p and that turns into a big deal when combined with the performance - or lack thereof - coming from P4M...

Windows XP seems to have no issues with the ultrabay numberpad if you happen to have it.
Linux Mint gave me some graphical issues on some boot ups, but it worked ok for online usage.
