Swapping the T60p Hydis into a similar T61
Swapping the T60p Hydis into a similar T61
This is my current config:
ThinkPad T60p 2007-WUK
BIOS - 2.20 79ETE0WW
T7200 - 64 bit (changed from T2600)
15in 1600x1200 LCD (BOE Hydis)
256MB ATI FireGL V5200
Win 10 32-bit, 4Gb ram
Samsung 860 EVO 250GB SSD
Got a couple of questions:
1. I was thinking of getting a similar non-widescreen T61 (with a 64 bit processor) off ebay and straight swapping the most valuable part of the T60p - The Hydis panel. Can this be done and will there be any hurdles? Anything to be aware of?
2. Will this new setup be compatible with Win 11 that's around the corner?
Tia for your inputs.

There is no 15" 4:3 T61, so no, it can't be done (but there is a 15" 4:3 R61/R61i which would be happy to get such a screen).
But you can put a 14.1" 4:3 T61 motherboard in that 15" T60 and thus create a T601F Frankenpad.

Thanks RBS,
Looks like Im heading towards finding a 15" 4:3 R61/R61i full laptop and swapping the Hydis into it.
However these seem to be hard to find even on eBay. Fingers crossed hope to find one in the near future and hopefully will work with Win 11 as well.

Hi, why not do the classic Frankepadding thing and put a 14" T61 4:3 motherboard into T60p chassis?
If you're happy with R61 you should be happy with a T61 motherboard with integrated graphics?
Or maybe get that last board with nVidia from TuuS if he's still got one as RBS suggested
P.S. you're sure aware about prices for 4Gb DDR2 sticks, right?

Re: Swapping the T60p Hydis into a similar T61
Well the only reason Im thinking of the R61/i is because it would be a simple swap of the screen whereas the Frankenpadding would require more work for which I dont have time.
The 15" 4:3 R61 is really hard to get though.

Hmm.. don't you need to open the screen assembly up on R61 to move the panel? I may be misunderstanding and I haven't done it myself but it seems to me putting a 4:3 T61 mobo into a 4:3 T60 or T60p body is likely less work... I imagined it'd be
to move panel
- fully disassemble R61 base, detach screen
- fully disassemble R61 screen
- fully disassemble T60p base, detach screen
- fully disassemble T60p screen
- assemble R61 screen
- assemble R61 base attaching the screen
- dispose of left-over T60p parts
to put a T61 4:3 mobo into a 4:3 T60/T60p
- fully disassemble T60p base, detach screen (can you keep the screen attached while working on the standoff?... possibly I guess)
- use Dremel or a file to remove one of the stand-offs
- use pliers to tear off modem off T61 motherboard (?)
- assemble T60p base attaching the screen
- dispose of broken T60p motherboard
I can be wrong if the screen can be moved as a whole - but you probably cannot can you?
I can also be wrong if you actually can open the screen up without detaching it from base. Even then.. isn't opening the screen up more scary than working just on T60p base?

Nah, you make it way too complicated!
- remove T60 LCD-bezel and BoeHydis LCD
- remove R61 LCD-bezel and R61 LCD
- mount BoeHydis LCD and R61 bezel in R61 lid, done!
- mount R61 LCD and T60 bezel in T60 lid, flog it!
