keyboard numbers drawing? T61
keyboard numbers drawing? T61
how can I get a drawing showing what numbers are assigned to keys on keyboard? had warning saying "key 40 is stuck" wth key is that lol
Re: keyboard numbers drawing? T61
With no information about whether it is the BIOS, an OS or program providing the message and in response to what action, I suggest you hold down each key in sequence at the appropriate time until you get the same message as opposed to another.
Re: keyboard numbers drawing? T61
its a keyboard error message saying key 40 is stuck but none of my PDF manuals have a map of the keys on keyboard to see which key is #40 and generic maps online dont even look like these keyboards and numbers vary. it just started popping up last couple times during boot-up while in BIOS. tried all keys and still have to skip (Esc) to start and all tabs/buttons flash often like a repeat key of some type is held and if I strum all keys it stops sometimes but still not fixed. without a keyboard map its hopelessly futile
Re: keyboard numbers drawing? T61
You can boot a linux live-cd and use "xev".
Run "xev -event keyboard" then test each key. Use the xev man page or search the web for how to use it.

Re: keyboard numbers drawing? T61
If you can't get the key to stop registering to re-register so that keyboard testing software can see which key is stuck, you can try loosening the metal clamp that's screwed together on the bottom side of a T61 keyboard to pinch the ribbon cable to the keyboard membrane, and this will disconnect all keyboard traces, and then you can retighten it.
As far as I have tried something like this on T520 to troubleshoot my broken keyboards, this won't blow any fuses

Re: keyboard numbers drawing? T61
so the down arrow key is 40 and after repeated cleaning etc it still sticks randomly causing same error message at boot up and also begins flashing text/icons on screen shortly after trying to un-stick. is this how these keyboards fail? I have spare keyboards but gets tiresome taring down so often for issues. my Bluetooth also quit powering up recently and no loose connections found nor replacing Bluetooth chip fix. besides lots of anouying software issues lately with all the forcing use of win 10 etc. all online sites are doing. I have to use different laptop for browsing due to the upgrade enforcement even my newer W500 with win 7 64bit is being fazed out soon so Linux here I come lol.

Re: keyboard numbers drawing? T61
If you are sure the down key is the only one affected, take off the keycaps and switches for all of the navigational keys, then you can peel and separate the keyboard membrane layers, and spot for any liquid damage.
If you spot some liquid damage though, do NOT just naively splash it down with alcohol! This is because with liquid damage, the traces are very weak and alcohol could wash them off and cause keys to stop working altogether!
Instead, I would suggest if you see two traces bridged together with liquid residue or something, gently scratch a gap between the two traces to sever their connection.
If it's near the pad where the down button presses the two membrane layers together, then yes you can use a tiny bit of alcohol
