x220t keeps restarting
x220t keeps restarting
Hello everyone!
My x220t stopped working. When i press the power buton it keep restarting every 3 secs. The screen stays black.
I tried to boot without wlan, wwan and hard drive but the same thing happends. When i try to boot without the ram modules
i hear 1-3-3-1 beeps but it stays on without restarting.
I have two modules of ram i tried both of them one each time but it still restarting.
Do you have any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Re: x220t keeps restarting
Try booting with only 1 stick of RAM installed, and the hard drive removed.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons

Re: x220t keeps restarting
I allready tried that with no success. Is it possible both of the rams failed the same time?
I dont have an extra one to try.
I tried to boot without cmos battery, wihout battery only with adapter on
I tried the trick with power button, but nothing.
Laptop had supervisor password active, but laptop was working fine.
Is it possible to happend this because I unplaged bios battery?

Re: x220t keeps restarting
Reinsert the CMOS battery.
Try booting on charger only, without HDD/SSD and go straight into BIOS by hitting F1 a few times.
If you don't know the password, check this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5z0HdLqgR_I

Re: x220t keeps restarting
Without battery it doesnt restart. It only stays on for 3 secs and goes off again.
F1 doesnt do anything. The screen stays black, it powers off before i can see thinkpad logo.
Sorry for my bad English. I hope you understand me!

Re: x220t keeps restarting
I tried that but it is the same.
I took out the motherboard and i found a blown capasitor. I have a faulty T430s motherboard. Can i desolder a capasitor from that and solder to my motherboard?
Are the capasitors the same? I can see a lot of them about the same size, or i need to find an identical? How can i recognise them?

Re: x220t keeps restarting
Problem is most capacitors only LOOK alike.
You'll need to find the schematics of your X220T and any other donor-motherboard.
But in the end it might be easier to find another X220T motherboard if bad RAM is not the problem.

Can a faulty ram blow the capacitor?
I will try to purchase a new motherboard but if the ram is faulty can it cause the new motherboard the same problem?

Re: x220t keeps restarting
Don't go buying anything yet.
If you can, take a close-up picture of what you think is that blown capacitor and its surroundings.
Nearby there should be markings like C243, C244, C365 etc. which means Capacitor nr. so-and-so.
Upload that to e.g. https://imgur.com/ and post a link here to that picture.
Someone with X220T schematics might be able to tell you what it is.
Also, there are several Youtube's around for a boot loop.
Does your screen show anything at all before it restarts?
Have a look at this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8WkyX0dan0

I found on ebay a x230t board. Can i put this board in my laptop?
Thanks in advance.

I don't have an X230/T430 etc to test, but it seems that you have to build it: https://bystram.be/posts/thinkpad-x230- ... -ec-patch/

Re: x220t keeps restarting
Ok. Thank you all for your help.
I will order the new board and when it arrives i will try to apply the pached bios.
I hope to make it work. It will be my first time trying such a thing, but with your help and knowledge
I think I can do it.
Thanks again!
