Thinking of upgrading my system.

For years I have been using T-61s. I live in 2 different states and have the same T-61s in each. When I go from one to the other I simply take the SDD with me. I also use a docking station in each location, also the same model. I need the stations because I keep 3 external drives working, which I also schlep with me. I am looking for some input about moving up to a newer model that will allow me to use it the way I do now, not having to carry the PC, just the hard drives. My OS of choice is Linux (Mint) and naturally I would like to stay with Lenovo, unless I am persuaded to switch. Anyone have any thoughts? Appreciate any help. I am not loaded, but can spend some bucks if I need to.

I don't know any Thinkpad after the T430 generation (circa 2012) that allows quick removal of the hard drive. Most of the new ones require removal of the entire bottom panel in order to access the hard drive bay.

That said, since you're using Linux, you can install it in an external SSD: I have a Debian installation on a 32GB M.2 2242 SATA SSD in a USB 3.0 enclosure that looks like an oversized flash drive:



Doing so frees you from the "easily accessible HDD bay" requirement, so now you can choose any Thinkpad model you fancy.

If there is no easy access to the internal drive just use a livecd on a USB key and a third drive in a USB enclosure to keep the internal drives in sync using rsync for example.
Depending on your requirements alternatively you can use matched W700's or W701's, they take the same amount of drives as a T61 + 2503 advanced dock and also has eSATA. A problem with them is that the power socket is directly on the planar, so vulnerable if you aren't careful or make use of the mini-dock.
Another alternative is you just keep your dual T61 setup and access all their drives over the network, so removing that constraint on your new machines.
There are also 15.4" T61p and R500-based frankenpads if you also want the flexviews, but these are not easy to construct.
