T400 CPU swap to T9600 stuck at 1.6ghz

#1 Post by Zozew » Mon Apr 22, 2024 9:55 am

Hello fellow thinkpadders,

Just did the mod the title says and I got a cpu stuck at 1.6ghz at 100% load.

I did the research, checking speed stepper, power management etc in bios to no avail... Still stuck..

Anybody got any advice? Try the modded bios?

I haven't updated to the latest bios 3.23, I've got the firewire so I think it's 3.23 for me.

I wanted to see if it was something else before upgrading the bios..

Any help/advice appreciated

Zozew

Does your T400 have no battery (or a dead one) and use a 65w charger?
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons

in response to your query in the other thread, my t400 has no problems with the t9600, i also have the ati graphics so I use the 90w PSU, and I have a 9 cell that holds a charge. The t9600 is one of the more power hungry procs offered in the t400.

Thats a no and a yes... But right now it's a yes and a yes... Sorry let me explain.

The poor baby was in such a state I had to sand and repaint it, all in glorious matt black, so right now she is naked... Meaning all the plastic covers are waiting for their matt clear coat so the battery can't be attached therfore practically it's a no battery laptop for a few days until I get the clear coat.

I'll see if I can attach the battery temporarily start it.

The poor girl also does something a bit weird, the device manager keeps refreshing like something is being constantly connected or disconnected.. Can't really find out what thought it was under usb devices at the bottom.. Its the only group that keeps expanding, the right corner USB port is detached for now could that be it...

Well I'm immensely grateful for your suggestions on my road to her total restoration..

I'm even taking the lcd apart as she was living in a very sandy environment and lots of brights pots on the screen... Need to carefully wipe all the sheets inside the lcd...

Anyway cheers!

Quick update, battery did the trick... Its good now when connected 2.8-2.9ghz 💪

However I'm encountering a strange behaviour, after the thinkvantage screen, before booting bios or pre-post I guess, the girl just stops for between 15-50s and then loads windows, no HDD activity, nothing, then when loading windows it's super fast probably less than 10s.

The reason i think this is not normal is because a few times it has loaded past this pre-post in just a sec..

Thanks again for the advice 💪

Regarding the Device Manager issue, could be any of the internal devices that are connected via USB: webcam, Bluetooth, or fingerprint reader. It's generally a 50/50 between a cable/connection issue (connector not fully seated or worn cable), or the device itself is malfunctioning (which is reasonable given that it's 15 years old by now).
