ThinkPad P71 weird power issue

#1 Post by Someguy12121 » Sun May 19, 2024 6:04 pm

So I picked up a P71 from work for free since it was deemed to be recycle. I got it home and have since been able to get it to power on and operate. However the weird issue with it is the only way that I have found for it to power on. So I have to press and hold the power button and while doing so I plug in the AC adaptor and the unit will power on. I know that the power button board is a lil weird itself as I think the ribbon cable soldering point to the power button board is not 100% solid but I still find it weird that this is the only way I can get it to power on. The power button functions normally otherwise, such as being able to press and hold to force a shutdown.

This is the model number: 20HKCTO1WW
The is the system SKU: LENOVO_MT_20HK_BU_Think_FM_ThinkPad P71
This is the processor: Processor Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1535M v6 @ 3.10GHz, 3096 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)
It is currently running the most recent BIOS patch that Lenovo has officially released which is 1.43.

If anything I can just deal with it being weird considering I got the unit for free and in otherwise excellent condition.

Get the P71 HMM manual, remove the keyboard.
On HMM page 93 check the step 7-8 connector from the power button wiring.
Be careful you do not break the 'roller' that holds that flat cable!
The power button may need replacement, if so, also remove the keyboard bezel.
Found this power button in the US: https://www.ebay.com/itm/305158710611
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
But I actually prefer Murphy's from Cork!

I am not sure quite what you mean. I also did notice that when the power button ribbon cable was moved at certain points it would lose connection and then reconnect causing it to flash 3 times as if were just getting powered for the first time.

One other thing I did notice was that I have been getting quite a few of this error in the event viewer, "Metadata staging failed, result=0x80070490 for container '{E85EB85E-1635-11EF-BD02-8C16450A331D}'" with the data in { } changing to a few different values but generally those values have been repeating between a few.

I am not sure quite what you mean don't understand...
Get a manual?
Check a part?
Replace if needed?

And if you Google for "Metadata staging failed, result=0x80070490" you'll get tons of solutions, such as this
