T61 power-socket and battery lights but no power

#1 Post by jerry12 » Sun Aug 09, 2015 9:48 am

Hello, I have a T61 that I have been using for about a year which I received in fairly new condition. I have Windows Vista installed - the original restore DVDs from Lenovo.

I had been having some trouble a few days ago when the t61 would reboot after shutting down. Then suddenly yesterday I tried turning on the notebook and had no response from pressing the power on button... the battery light turns on and the power-socket light is on when I connect the t61 to the power adapter but no power up of the computer at all.

The computer, just before, had a problem where it would reboot after shutdown, This happened just recently a day or two before. To try to get around the automatic reboot on shutdown, i followed this guide...

http://www.pcworld.com/article/247392/m ... _down.html

unfotunately, this had no effect and did not work for me.

Also, I followed a recommendation to try to turn off Wake-on-LAN, in the BIOS, before doing what I mentioned above. I received a blue screen on windows startup then no blue screens on following startups.

Finally, I read about the only way of shutting down the computer was by pressing the power button. I pressed the physical power button immediately after boot, before windows had a chance to start.

One comment, I was trialing Rollback RX some time ago. So it was on the system, don't know if all this makes any difference.

Going back to the power problem, I tried disconnecting the power adapter and removing the battery, then pressing the power button 10 times at one second intervals and then holding it for 30 seconds and then reconnecting the battery and power adapter. So far, the t61 will not turn on.

Any help and suggestions, I am thankful for.

Disconnect all non essential components, such as wireless lan, HDD, modem, battery, dvd drive, touchpad, etc. Leave only the ram, cpu +cpu cooler, display, and keyboard plugged in. Plug in the ac adapter and try to turn the computer on. If there are multiple sticks of ram, try testing each individually in the different slots.

Hello, brchan... I don't have the tools handy at the moment to open the computer, not to mention being a little affraid to try, but I disconnected the power adapter and unplugged the battery, then I removed the Cd Dvd drive and finally, I did the static discharge procedure by pressing the power button as I mentioned above... after this I plugged in the power adapter without plugging in the battery or the cd dvd drive, and it booted into windows vista.

Unfortunately, it didn't turn on after that. I tested afterwards with the battery and drive, but did not turn on.

Keep the battery out, and try again.
A dead battery could create havoc...

And? How did you find the solution? I have the same problem and if you solve something on a forum you should give US the solution.

I agree that it is good manners to share the solution, but I doubt you're going to hear it from the poster who seems to not have posted anything since then, which was almost 9 years ago...

A couple of years ago I bought a "for parts" 4:3 T61 off ebay that had the description "shows power but won't turn on".
It turns out one of the USB A ports on the left was mangled inside with the metal prongs of the socket making contact with itself creating a short. I un-mangled it and it turned on without issue.
Maybe it's something similar to that?
