Thinkpad X300 need help finding new LCD

#1 Post by Insomniac1971 » Sat Mar 29, 2025 11:00 am

Hi all, my beloved ThinkPad X300 needs a new LCD.

Maybe someone could suggest a replacement. 🙂

Thank you in advance 🙂
Jan

UPDATE :

I would like to know if its possible to use other LCD than the one in the laptop and other part number. HMM only have one LCD listed LTD133EQ1B

https://www.panelook.com/LTD133EQ1B_Tos ... 11091.html

I have found similar LCD's on panelook.com though with lower resolution, which is ok for me as it makes objects on the screen larger.

Second question
Current LCD cable is LVDS (1 ch, 6-bit) , 40 pins Connector
Is it possible to get LCD cable LVDS (2 ch, 6-8-bit) , 40 pins Connector for this model and use LCD's with higher resolution(I am just curious)?

The main issue here is that the X300 only has 1 LCD cable FRU and we don't know if it supports 2-channel LVDS. The schematics suggest that the system board itself might have 2-channel LVDS, but without a suitable cable it's impossible to be certain. That said, there has been an IPS/AFFS mod as reported by fellow forum member 600X: viewtopic.php?f=43&t=119764 and there was another one that involved rewiring T420/T430 FHD kit in order to use eDP LCDs.

The datasheet for the X300's screen can be found here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/18-I7yP ... sp=sharing
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons

Thank you for answering 😉

I wanted to set up the X300 for my son, I could buy another laptop but I hate to throw something out and increase the worlds eWaste, I rather make it work. it actually still work, but you can't really see much on the LCD. External VGA screen should work, though I don't have one. My mind have been wondering if I should try to get hold of an external VGA LCD which draw it power from USB, but it looks like, I would have to build it myself and would cost more than I am willing to pay right now.

So - Would attaching a higher 1600x900 - 1920x1980
(or original 1440x900) resolution, 2 channel 6bit(or 8bit) LCD to the 40pins LVDS cable, make it blow up something on the motherboard, or simply just not work(if the cable in fact is only 1 channel)?

If simply, just not work, I might have a place to test it, there is a repair shop in Calapan that has a lot of broken(but work a bit) test LCD's, some being 40 pins.

Is the cable compatible with EDP 40pins LCD's?

Regarding the other LCD's(if they physically fit the frame), since they are same cable as original, could they be used - Without blowing something on the motherboard?

your best bet is to seek an exact replacement or something known to be electrically compatible. given that the AFFS mod axur-delmeria referenced did work, and IIRC that panel is 1280x800, there is a good chance that yes, a lower resolution 1280x800 will work too, if also electrically compatible. so look for a 1 ch 6 bit that so long as it physically fits, then good, do that.

there is no point to look at putting 1600x900 or 1920x1080, these will not fit under any circumstance, at that point for the effort you put in, just buy a new laptop.

Thank you for your answer 😁

You mention 1280x800, I did find that in some of the panels at panelook.com, but what about 1366x768 would that work too?

I might buy another laptop, but I would like to exhaust the options first.

take note of the physical dimensions of the panels. 1440x900 and 1280x800 are both 8:5 aspect ratio,, whereas 1366x768, 1600x900, 1920x1080 etc.. are 16:9 aspect ratio. they will not fit the chassis of X300 under any circumstance.

even the fellow axur-delmeria referenced who did the T420 converter board mod, if you search up his images, he cut up the lid to fit a 16:9 LCD, it's not right.

do not hesitate if you have any other questions. were happy to help :)

Thank you for all your replies😁

I think I will put it in the cabinet for now, if I come accross a VGA lcd monitor that is light enough and will fit, I might do a mod. Or if I find the original LTD133EQ1B I will bring it back to life, I have everything else, it has new fan and keyboard, 160Gb SSD with Linux Mint 20.2 cinnamon on it, 2x2Gb samsung ram. And I still have the original 64Gb SSD with Windows 7 Pro 64bit.

If I want to bring it to life, I have to buy :
2x4gb DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHz 200pin Ram.
New battery + Extra.
LCD.

A new second hand laptop might be better, and my son can play with upgrading this one when he gets older, he will be 8 in september.

The only portable monitor I've found that has both VGA input and 5V power is this puny 10 inch screen on Lazada. The images depict it plugged to a power bank instead of a laptop's USB port though.
