X1 carbon gen 5 and 6 keyboard and power button assembly interchangeability

#1 Post by dcfbf » Mon Dec 15, 2025 4:15 pm

I really like my X1 Carbon gen 6. It's close to the perfect combination of lightness, power, and key travel. (All it needs is a 7 row)

However, I don't like the colors of the lights. Whitish-blue really triggers my astigmatism.

I know the Gen 5 sill has the green and orange lights and it shares the same design as the gen 6.
So is it possible to do the swap or do some screws/clips not line up? Or maybe is the connector different?
If anyone has both or has experience, I'd like to hear your thoughts.

As a bonus I'd also enjoy the blue specs on the scroll button.

Community discussions also suggest the Gen 5 and Gen 6 keyboards look and fit the same chassis, and many users confirm compatibility

I couldn't find anyone else which is why I wanted to ask here.

I already know that the keyboard is removable on it's own but I'm not sure if the screws will line up or if it will blow any fuses.
I looking to get a gen 5 to see what happens but I haven't found one at a good price yet.
