T23 & CD/DVD
T23 & CD/DVD
I have had a T23 for about a year. last week the CD Drive stopped working right, possibly not running at full speed. I can access the directory, but cannot run CD intensive games. I may have left it in my car on a hot day for a couple hours which may have caused the problem???
So, I think I need to replace the drive. I looked at IBM.com and find several replacement units listed. I like the idea of upgrading to a DVD burner but I wonder if my T23 can really run it efficiently.
If I buy from a third party, will the same part numbers found on IBM.com insure compatability, i.e. is the info on their website reliable?
Does anyone have any words of wisdom?
Thanks
Rich J

I recommend getting the NEC ND-6650 drive from Newegg for $100:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6827152048
It is a high quality 8X DVD+/-R burner and can burn dual layers at 4X. The IBM drives can not burn dual layers.
Dual layer discs are still very expensive, but you never know.
I am using the older NEC ND-6500 in my T23 with no problems. I have had to upgrade to Nero 6 to get support for this drive though.
You will need to take the back connector and the side rails from your bad CD drive and attach it to the NEC drive. You will also need to cut a notch in the lower right corner of the faceplate from the NEC drive so it does not block the pull-out lever of the ultrabay slot.

Re: T23 & CD/DVD
Go into device manager, and check under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers > 'Primary IDE Channel' & 'Secondary IDE Channel' > Advanced Settings. Verify the current transfer mode is DMA (usually the hard drive is on the Primary IDE Channel, and the CD drive is on the Secondary IDE Channel. Try changing to DMA mode there. If you are unsuccessful, right click and uninstall everything under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, then reboot. Windows should reinstall the drivers, and repair the DMA mode problem. It happened to me once.jcnj6 wrote:I have had a T23 for about a year. last week the CD Drive stopped working right, possibly not running at full speed. I would second the 6650. It is a very good laptop burner which is good to know cause there are a lot of crappy laptop DVD burners out there. I have the slightly older 6500 in an external case for my T42. It does very good burns. I would also recommend Taiyo Yuden DVD+R discs. The NEC will burn them in about 10.5 minutes which is very good for a laptop burner. I am assuming the 6650 is the same. FujiFilm discs marked Made in Japan sold at BestBuy and elsewhere are TYs. You can also get them at places like Rima.com. The T23 has more than enough juice to run the NEC. I have seen DVD burners work on PIIs. Good Luck.
No, the NEC drive will not fit a T4x slot. The NEC drive is 12.7mm thick while the T4x slim drive is 9.5mm thick. You can put the NEC drive in a slim USB enclosure. I think someone mentioned that it can be USB powered.baraider wrote:will it fit the new T4x when i upgrade them later on? I think the 4x has a slim drive while the t23 has a different drive size?
Nero 6
I went to Newegg and plan on getting the drive. I have searched and found several versions of Nero 6 for a wide range of prices. Newegg has 2 versions but I cant see the difference except the model #. Ebay has lots of Nero6 but for 1/3 the price.
Any wisdom about what I am looking at, what to look for, and what to avoid?
Thanks

All those getting the NEC, check out: www.cdfreaks.com and go to their forum section and then search the NEC drive. You'll be amazed at all that can be done with this little guy....firmware updates, bitsetting burning of DVD's, etc., etc. Have fun!

Nero 6.6 oem can be had at; bestbargainpc.com for approx. $4 (Ship & Handle)
Install only the oem...(It comes w/ suite of programs)...
'IBM' DLA will conflict with Nero 6.6 oem...I uninstall it FIRST...

I belive that with a credit card, you can buy Nero on-line and download it. Also, it tends to come with DVD drives and burners. I'm thinking that you might get a free copy with the NEC you're about to drive. Why not wait and see?

You can get an OEM copy of Nero on eBay for $10 or less. The 6650 at NewEgg is a bare drive. It has no software. If you want to go the free route. CDBurnerXP and DeepBurner are free and work well for basic stuff.
