I was also trying to decide between 2 of the models you're looking at. The 2373-9xu and the 2373-9zu. It is $140 dollar difference between the two and as you know the only diference is the dvd burner. For that $140 dollars you can get a much better external burner. Unless you need to write dvd's while your flying or something ...
I ordered the 2373-9xu through Bill it should be coming shortly. I ordered it on monday, he got it yesterday and it shipping it today. He gave me a great price as well.

The Ultrabay DVDR is for the same reason you bought the T42, it's slim form factor. Once you start adding accessories on the side, it negates the portability of a notebook. Why not just get a much more powerful desktop with better everything?phat_mats wrote:Unless you need to write dvd's while your flying or something ...
A notebook is already a compromise. Having a slower DVD-R is just another compromise. It wouldn't be worth it if you weren't planning to burn DVDs because the DVD/CDRW is faster.
It'd be a good idea to get an external one if you wanted to burn DVDs at home though.
Daniel, do you know if you're burning CD's (I'm planning on burning DVD's only 20-40% of the time) with the DVD-R, does it go to the burning speed of the CD-RW/DVD (24X I believe)?Daniel wrote:

this is an un-deucated response and I'll try and verify this ina bit when I have some time but I don't think the DVD burner will burn at 16x. I think it 2x ... maybe 4x maximum. Even big external players just came out with the capability to burn at 16x. Most of them are still 8x
edit: my mistake I just found this info
Read Speed - 24x (CD) / 8x (DVD)
Write Speed - 16x (CD) / 1x (DVD)
Rewrite Speed - 8x (CD) / 2x (DVD-RAM) / 1x (DVD-RW)
As you can see it is the rewrite speeds that I was thinking of. Does this mulitburner slim bay support the DVD + and - ?

wow ... you must rack up the frequent flyer miles.
From the post a couple back about paying for form and having everything compacted into a small notebook ...
I agree to a certain extent. My point was about things like buring DVD's that most will do very rarely, unless your backing up constantly. You really don't need to pay for a lesser quality DVD burner unless you REALLY REALLY need to use it on the road.

Why is my P1 Gen 7 so much better on battery? Cool, quiet, fast — but not on AC.
