Just curious because I could really use the extra space as more and more of my daily applications are becoming very data intensive.
that and it's the only thing holding me back from upgrading my x40 to an x41 tablet.

It's a matter of personal preference. I'm running 1600x1200 on a 15" monitor, which has an even smaller pixel pitch than 1400x1050 on a 14" screen. And sometimes I wish my screen was even higher resolution.redskin wrote:I highly doubt that it will happen. 1400 x 1050, on a 14" already small enough and I could barely see with my 20/20 vision. imagine 1400 x 1050 on a 12"? unless you want to decrease the resolution, which is not a good idea on LCD screen, because text will look blurry and out of focus.
The Portege's 12" SXGA+ screen looks fantastic! If only it were built into an IBM machine
IBM ThinkPad T42p (2373-7XU): 1.8GHz/1024MB, 15" UXGA, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.
T42 (2374-3VU): 1.7GHz/512MB, 14.1"SXGA+, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.
T42 (2374-3VU): 1.7GHz/512MB, 14.1"SXGA+, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.
Assuming a 15" viewable area, and square pixels (which, at 1280x1024, your pixels aren't QUITE square when on a 4:3 screen), your screen is 109.28 DPI.
The current X series displays: 105.79 DPI
A 14.1" SXGA+ display (like that on the T series): 124.11 DPI
A 15" UXGA display (like that on the T series): 133.33 DPI
A 12.1" SXGA+ display: 144.63 DPI
A 12.1" 1280x1024 display: 135.47 DPI
And, for good measure, just cause I'm curious... A 15" QXGA display, like the one that you can get for an R5x for $1300: 170.67 DPI
Anyway, my point is made. Essentially, a 1280x1024 12.1" display would be roughly as dense as a 1600x1200 15" display, and those sell well on the T series, don't they?
Also, your display now is roughly as dense as a current X series display. However, note that you sit closer to the X series LCD than you would on your CRT.

Nice analysis, bhtooefr! Kudos for throwing in the QXGA R-series option
I don't think the UXGA 15" is threatening to overtake sales of the SXGA+ models anytime soon, but it's interesting how much more resistance there is here on the X-series forum to any resolution higher than XGA! Even when nobody is suggesting that we REPLACE it with a higher res. Some of us would just like the OPTION

I was just saying that in absolute technological terms, higher pixel densities is always good (the holy grail of paper readibility that IBM and others have researched for years is supposedly at 200-300 ppi or something, as I recall).
But current Windows version is somewhat inflexible in its GUI/widget configuration. It's a similar problem even with current Windows Mobile (Pocket PC) PDA OS... Next-gen Windows is supposed to go a long way to resolve this inflexibility?

Resolution independent rendering, yes. But that's not to say there aren't a lot of people out there who would actually like a higher resolution to work with than XGA on an X-series, even at a lower pixel pitch.beq wrote:I was just saying that in absolute technological terms, higher pixel densities is always good (the holy grail of paper readibility that IBM and others have researched for years is supposedly at 200-300 ppi or something, as I recall).
