Stolen and recovered laptop story

#1 Post by no_man » Thu Jul 28, 2005 8:16 pm

This is story from work, not about an IBM Thinkpad, but it could have been.

A fellow worker goes to professional baseball game after work, leaves laptop case on front seat, returns from the game to find window broken, laptop gone. Inside the laptop case was an ID badge of laptop owners name and phone.

Bye-bye laptop. The FBI reports that 3% of stolen laptops are recovered, this is one of them.

Several days pass, fellow worker gets a phone call from a store manager of local coffee shop, he wants $100. for this laptop. Our security chief is informed, goes and picks-up the laptop, gives him no money.

Seems that a coffee shop worker (a teenager) purchased the laptop for $100. from the street, and was bragging about it, the manager sees an asset ID tag on the laptop display cover, finds the owners name and number in the laptop case and was trying to recover the young mans lost $100.00 and deliver the stolen laptop to its rightful owner.

Our company has several laptops stolen each week, this is the first recovered. Corporate data exists only on network servers and is encryted.

K I'm thinking the same thing...

Inside jobs?

Bad neighborhood?

Anyways glad it ended well. Hope you gave the manager a little more than just the 100$!!

Each week, the either the neighborhood totally blows and/or some employees need to start taking better security measures. When on the street, locking the car doors are not a security measure. In the mind of most thieves, locked doors is what windows are for.
