FS: High-end T42 15" SXGA+ FlexView LCD, warranty, worl

#1 Post by Brad » Sun Oct 12, 2008 5:48 am

In continuation to the three T42’s that I recently offered for sale (here), I have been able to obtain a second, larger batch of high-end 15” SXGA+ (1400x1050) T42’s with the beautiful, famous FlexView/IPS display, and are now offering these for sale. This may be one of the few chances to get one of increasingly rare, last original IBM-branded Thinkpad’s… which many owners have said they consider to represent the peak of IBM ThinkPad’s - especially owing to the 4:3 (non-widescreen!) FlexView/IPS display – but also because of the aesthetically very pleasing slim and elegant design in combination with a cool, silent and fast laptop.

Several of these T42’s are still covered by the IBM warranty (hard to find today!), while the IBM warranty on others has expired. Since the ”out-of-IBM-warranty” T42’s however are all in excellent technical condition, and because they have been thoroughly inspected and tested, I am therefore personally offering a six month warranty on these: Within this period I will repair or replace broken parts (and I and the buyer will split shipping costs to/from repair – isn’t that fair?).

Two different T42 models are available; 2373-JXU and 2373-N1U. The specifications are as follows:
In their specifications for the model 2373-JXU, IBM wrote:Pentium M 735 (1.7 GHz ”Dothan” with low-power ”SpeedStep” technology)
512 MB RAM
40 GB 5400 rpm harddisk
15” SXGA+ (1400x1050 pixels, format 4:3) FlexView/IPS TFT LCD
ATI Radeon 9600 GPU with 64 MB VRAM (will also work with Vista)
CD-RW/DVD (24x24x24x/8x)
IBM 802.11 b/g wireless (MPCI) (Atheros!)
Modem (CDC)
1 Gb Ethernet (LOM)
UltraNav
Secure Chip
6 cell Li-Ion battery
WinXP Pro
… and:
In their specifications for the model 2373-N1U, IBM wrote:Pentium M 745 (1.8 GHz ”Dothan” with low-power ”SpeedStep” technology)

Warranty: Two of the 2373-JXU’s are still covered by the original IBM warranty until 2008-10-14 and five of the 2373-N1U’s are also still covered by the original IBM warranty until 2009-05-13. The IBM warranty can be extended for another two years through purchasing the Lenovo P/N 41C9180 which is available for $148 (see the thread Warranty extension - e.g. the post by Tim M of Tue Jan 29, 2008 11:38 am).

Condition of these T42’s: Ranges from excellent to above average for a ThinkPad of this age, except for two of the JXU’s which have cracked bases (and therefore are priced accordingly). All T42’s have been carefully inspected and tested – no signs at all of any problems have been found. As mentioned above, I am personally offering a six month warranty on the out-of-warranty T42’s: Within this period I will repair or replace broken parts.

Some additional notes on the condition of all these T42’s are as follows:

- No dead or stuck pixels.
- No pressure marks on LCD.
- No ”dust specs” or hairs inside the LCD.
- Keyboard and palm rest: Some look excellent (they actually appear new!), while other have some typical shine and wear.
- Normal signs of wear on outside.
- Battery status is in the green.
- Both the N1U’s and the JXU’s have the long ”M10” fan and run cool and very silently.

Additional information about T42’s can be found in Overview - ThinkPad T42, T42p and Detailed specifications - ThinkPad T42/p and Overview - ThinkPad T42/p or IBM ThinkPad T Series notebooks while even more detailed information is available in the IBM ThinkPad T42 announcement letter.

Images of a T42 (of the 14.1” model) are e.g. found here or here and for the 2373-N1U’s with finger-print reader here or here. Moreover, a very nice collection of images of 15” SXGA+ FlexView/IPS T42’s (identical to the ones for sale here) can be found in the thread X32/T42/T60/accessories – see the post by dr_st of Sat Sep 22, 2007 10:51 am. Finally, the reason why FlexView/IPS LCD’s are so highly worshipped and renowned are easily evident from the same thread; see the post by dr_st of Sat Sep 22, 2007 11:21 am.

Software installed: The software on these T42’s has been restored to a fresh factory contents condition, and therefore comes with Windows XP Pro SP2 completely installed (including all “Windows Update” of today), all IBM utilities etc. The “ThinkVantage Rescue & Recovery” partition is also intact on the harddisk. Finally, the antivirus program AVG Free8 has been installed (with all updates as of today). The T42’s are therefore directly ready for use, including surfing on the internet etc. Open Office can be installed if requested.

These T42’s all comes with:
- original (practically brand new) IBM AC-adapter (16.5 V/4.5 A/72 W) incl. power-cord.
- Windows XP Pro COA sticker
- original IBM 6-cell battery
- a complete set of IBM ThinkVantage Rescue & Recovery Media

Options available:
- add a stick of 512 MB RAM: $15
- upgrade the present 40 GB, 5400 rpm HDD to 80 GB/7200 rpm (limited number of available): $80 or upgrade to a 100 GB/7200 rpm: $110
- upgrade to a DVD-RW: $30
- add an original IBM, 6-cell battery in ”green” state: $20
- add an original IBM, 9-cell battery in ”green” state: $40
- add an original IBM, 9-cell battery brand new in Lenovo box: $75
- add an IBM Quick (dual!) Battery Charger (P/N 02K6718 – shown here): $10

Price:
- for the (five) 2373-N1U’s that are still covered by the IBM warranty until 2009-05-13 (and which are in excellent condition), asking $450

- for the remaining (three) 2373-N1U’s that are out-of-IBM-warranty (and which are in excellent condition), asking $420

- for the (two) 2373-JXU’s that are still covered by the IBM warranty until May 2009 (but which have cracked bases and pieces of the plastics broken of, near the USB-port and parallel-port), asking $325

- for the remaining 2373-JXU’s that are out-of-IBM-warranty (but are in excellent condition), asking $350

Prices including shipping to lower 48 US states. Worldwide shipping is also available; please pm for actual cost

For potential buyers who haven't done business with me before, please feel free to check my reputation in the thread Positive feedback for FAIR Traders :-)

Two JXUs

#3 Post by lexicon » Fri Oct 17, 2008 2:25 am

Brad,
two JXUs (in warranty), the warranty until 2009 or 2008?
I assume you have only two JXUs with warranty; but I saw the warranty stated differently in these sections :
Warranty: Two of the 2373-JXU’s are still covered by the original IBM warranty until 2008-10-14
Price:
- for the (two) 2373-JXU’s that are still covered by the IBM warranty until May 2009 (but which have cracked bases and pieces of the plastics broken of, near the USB-port and parallel-port), asking $325

I just received two of the laptops mentioned here and the specs were as advertised to a T (pun intended). Keep in mind I'm not an expert on thinkpads but I'm not a computer rookie either.

Comments:

Brad states the exterior condition as "normal wear". I'd say that may be misleading. These showed LESS than the amount of wear I'd expected. The only thing, between the two laptops, that was even marginally noticeable is that one of the rubber feet was missing. Otherwise very nice to excellent condition.

Next, these Flexview screens (that I heard so many people rave about in my post that got me sent in this direction) are in near Mint condition. They look brand new to my eyes, perhaps one small "something" somewhere but nothing noticeable unless you look hard for a long time and/or someone points it out to you. Well within my satisfaction zone, and I'm picky. If you want something better than this you better just buy new in box stuff from lenovo.

(by the way, these type screens are brighter/better viewing angle than my personal T61... It's not hype... my parents are going to love this guy and my roommate was very impressed with his)

Software and hardware all appear to be working fine after a quick going over, batteries (New, thanks brad) were as agreed.

Wireless works fine (picks up signals from quite far away).

Keyboard/palmrest are just fine for me, didn't look very close to be honest since that's a non-issue for me.

Packaging had taken a beating on the outside (not due to the seller, of course), but the laptops/accessories were safe and sound.

What can I say? Ignoring a total meltdown of the system in the near future, I'm totally satisfied. Positive rep will be posted to "good seller thread" once I give these guys a final lookover.

Thanks again Brad.
Simple is as simple does.

I am glad everything arrived as expected and you are satisfied.

My hope is to exceed your expectations and from your post I believe I did.

These are truly fine examples of the best laptop LCD's ever produced.

If anyone else is interested please don't hesitate to let me know. I know the forum appreciates the flexview LCD's. If you are thinking about getting one now is a great time. They are resonably priced and since they are no longer available rare as can be in this condition.

Brad,
I haven't posted praise (yet) under the topic, "Positive feedback for Fair Traders" because my experience with you has been SO incredibly positive that I feel like I'm going to have to put a lot of thought into writing an exceptional praise post for you. You deserve it. The T42 you sold me is superb. Runs like a charm, the 15" flexview screen looks brand new, it's beautiful and is a joy to work with. I'm posting this comment using the T42 right now. At first I was hesitant to buy from you because your prices are so good! I thought there had to be some catch. I'm glad my caution didn't win out! I appreciate that you took care to package the shipment really well too. I cannot thank you enough. I promise at some point I will post some praise for you in the Positive Feedback thread. Gratefully,
Inky

Brad:

I can’t help it: Since I got my first ThinkPad (a wonderful 15" SXGA+ FlexView T42!) several years ago, I have been simply addicted to these! :-) I own two of these beauties myself, and I have helped several friends and family members to experience the T42/FlexView-joy as well… and now I am looking for a couple more of these increasingly rare, high-end 15” SXGA+ T42’s. Therefore: Kindly let me know if you still have any (or all?) of these models available:

a) The 2373-N1U’s which are still covered by the original IBM warranty until 2009-05-13
b) The 2373-N1U’s out of warranty
c) The 2373-JXU’s?

Thanks very much in advance for an update… Now I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that you haven’t sold all of these beauties! :-)

PS: Congratulations with the tremendously positive user/buyer-feedback for these FlexView-T42’s that you continue to receive (as witnessed from this thread, and from the “Positive feedback for FAIR Traders” tread and in various other posts scattered elsewhere over this forum) – this is exactly why I have bought all my T42’s via this forum and by far prefer continue to do that! :thumbs-UP:

Johan,

Thanks for your inquiry.

Despite having sold quite a few of these beauties there are still a few that remain.

Right now there are 5 N1U's available of which 3 have warranty that expire between 5-13-09 and 5-17-09. There are also 2 JXU's available.

Another option if anyone is interested is an upgrade of the LCD from SXGA+ to UXGA. This would be an entire LCD lid swap with nice UXGA lids that denote T42p on the clear plate. This option would add $70 to any of these T42's.

You can email me at bboraxjr@aol.com.

Thanks very much for this update; wonderful news! I'm happy to hear that there is still a (last!) chance to grab one - or more! - of these magnificent (apparently all in "like-new" condition?!) simply superb high-end 15" SXGA+ FlexView T42's. I just sent you an e-mail... so watch out for another customer immediately lining up in the queue before it is too late! :-)

Gosh .... I was about ready to let my barely used 2373-CWU T42 1.8 GHz go to eBay (while it still has the 5-Year Extended depot warranty that I purchased out to November 4, 2009 through IBM back in 2007 for a couple of Ben Franklins, as I recall). I ordered the T42 itself directly from IBM in late 2004 through my university's faculty program and upgraded its optical drive in 2006 to a Super Multi-Burner Ultrabay drive (Part #40Y8622 DVD-RW/CD-RW for another pair of Ben Franklins). It's got the 15" Flexview-IPS SXGA+ (1400x1050) screen w/ discrete graphics (ATI Radeon 9600 64MB), Bluetooth, an 80 GB 5400RPM HDD plus upgraded memory to 1 GB of RAM. No bad pixels and the screen and keyboard are like new with very few hours as I alway used an external KB, mouse and external monitor with the lid closed. Even the battery still holds about 75% of full capacity after 4-1/2 years because I always stored or docked it at 45% charge and performed a reconditioning operation every 2 or 3 months (us old-timer Mechanical Engineers tend to have a touch of OCD when it comes to caring for machines .... unlike the planned-obsolescence casual throw-away mentality of my engineering students these days). Only got to travel with it outside my home 2 or 3 times. My T61 replaced it in early 2007 and now my T61p has replaced the T61 (still running w/lids closed on a docking station). Also have all the T42's WinXP SP2 IBM supplied Recovery Disks and all its original shipping boxes too. Wife says it's time to start thinning things out, but after all the raves above about the T42's screen quality, I decided to fire-it-up an see for myself if the 15" 4:3 Flexview-IPS screen is really that much better than my T61 and T61p TN screens.

By golly, it sure is ...... I think I'll keep it as a future collectable ..... and especially since I see nice 15" T42 Flexviews going for a mere US$250 on eBay.

I'll throw out some of my wife's clutter instead :thumbs-UP:
